We have a lot planned for this section, so keep checking back for updates.

Desert Island Songs

Jeromy Darling

Favorite Songs:
Fields of Gold, Sting – off the album Ten Summoner’s Tales

“This is more for sentiment than anything I guess. I proposed to my wife with this song. The imagery is so vivid sometimes I forget it’s a song.”

Rain, Patty Griffin – off the album 1,000 Kisses

“This is such a sad song, and maybe that’s why I like it so much. She expresses that small town broken heart with as much authenticity as Springsteen, but with less grit and more heartache. And I love her voice.”

Runner Up:

Whipping Post, The Allman Brothers – off of the album The Allman Brothers Band

These Arms Are Mine, Otis Redding – off the album Pain In My Heart

Favorite Albums:

Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen

“Real dark, but pretty groundbreaking seeing as how it was only supposed to be a demo.”

One Moment More, Mindy Smith

“Her song Falling, and basically the whole record, helped me through a really hard time.”

Howl, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

“I just love this sound. Gritty blues rock ‘n roll with brains.”

Lucas Shogren

Favorite Songs:

Shostakovich cello concerto, Shostakovich

“Russian Composer Shostakovich who dealt with Stalin’s regime and had much of his music banned from the country for a long time (including this piece). This piece was first premiered by Mstslava Rostropovich who was one of the greatest cellists of all time, (who coincidentally was my teachers cello instructor).”

Barber Violin Concerto Movement 2, Barber

“‘Written by American composer Barber who composed this piece during the 20th century even though it sounds extremely romantic. Barber decided to write music in a style that he liked rather than being pressured by feature American composers of his time, such as Schoenberg, Berg, and Ives who wrote more scientifically and obscure.”

Runner up:

Warehouse, Dave Matthews – off the album Under the Table and Dreaming

“To be honest I don’t know how to describe this. Dave Matthews is simply my favorite contemporary artist today. His musical style is so unique and his impact on music has had an influence on almost every great artists after him. The one problem I have with music is I never know the words because that’s not what I listen to. I could listen to a song a thousand times and not know one word. I couldn’t even tell you what this song is about.”

Volcano, Damien Rice – off the album O

“I like Damien Rice’s music for a lot of reasons. The biggest reason is I like how simple his music is and how he doesn’t clutter the music and keeps it very simple. I think music is best when it’s simple like this. Again I don’t know what this song means but I do like the music within the song.”

Favorite Albums:

Dave Matthews, Under The Table and Dreaming

Paris La Belle Époque, Yo-Yo Ma

Bart Phillips

Favorite Songs:

New Horizons, David Gray – off the album Flesh

“The lyrics made me dig deeper into areas of my heart that I had not previously gone to.”

Shelter From The Storm, Bob Dylan – off the album Blood on the Tracks

“The quest for wisdom gives me the chills.”

Favorite Albums:

Bob Dylan, Bring It All Back Home

“This album made me want to be a songwriter.”

Johnny Cash, American IV - The Man Comes Around

“I like the production and overall sound that he got on this album, more than any other album I’ve heard. It’s very rare that one of an artist’s best albums is the last of his life.”

Tom Waits, Mule Variations

“Hard to describe how I feel about this one.”
